what is magnetic separation in chemistry?

One of the biggest challenges facing the mining industry is the separation of unwanted substances from the extraction process with valuable substances. Whether mining through open pit mines or underground, large amounts of waste are produced in the form of worthless or low-value minerals and unusable man-made materials. These materials can be very difficult to separate from valuable materials after the miners. Perhaps the most effective way to separate these materials is through magnetic separation.

What is a magnetic separator?

A magnetic separator is a process that uses magnetic force to remove metal or ferrous materials from a mixture.

The magnetic separator consists of a vibrating feed mechanism, upper and lower belts and magnets. The bulk material is transported to the lower belt by a vibrating mechanism. At this point, the magnet pulls any material that is susceptible to magnetic attraction onto the upper strip, effectively separating the unwanted metal from the rest of the block.

Magnetic separator

In the mining industry, magnetic separation is the most common method used to separate "heterogeneous ore" or unwanted scrap metal from other bulk materials. Stray ore usually consists of artificial by-products produced by the mining process itself, such as wires from explosives, nuts and bolts, nails, pieces of hand tools (such as lifting hammers and drill bits) or sharp points of heavy duty extraction buckets.

Magnetic separators are usually placed at the beginning of the mine material processing line to remove debris ore before they can cause damage to "downstream" equipment such as ore crushers and conveyor belts, which are easily damaged by metal fragments or other sharp objects.

Most magnetic extraction systems are designed to be easily retrofitted to existing production and delivery systems, so important equipment relocation is not necessary.

Type of magnetic separator

The type of magnetic separator used in mines depends on what materials they extract and how much impurity ore they produce in their processes. As a result, separators of different magnetic flux or power can be used. There are two types of magnetic separators; electromagnetic and permanent.

An electromagnetic separator generates a magnetic field by converting power from alternating current to direct current. Electromagnetic separators can be used to remove bulk impurities from bulk materials. These separators are typically suspended above the conveyor belt and draw up unwanted material upwards. Electromagnetic separators are easy to clean because removing their impurity ore separated from the volume is as simple as turning off the power source that generates the magnetic field.

Permanent magnets consist of materials that produce their own magnetic fields. Although not as powerful as electromagnetic separators, permanent magnets work better at attracting ferromagnetic materials such as nickel, cobalt, iron and some rare earth metals. Some permanent magnets are made of rare earth metals, which have the ability to attract even stainless steel, which is generally not susceptible to magnetic pull. In order to clean the permanent magnets, a stainless steel scraper must be used to remove any metal parts from the magnet surface.
