The magnetic field of a given PTMS separator is generated by a permanent magnet or electromagnet. There are two different types of permanent magnets.
PTMS Magnetic Separator
The first is a "ferrite" magnet for low-strength PTMS magnetic separators. Ferrite is a very inexpensive material with medium energy products up to ~ 4.5 million Gauss (MGOe). The energy product of a permanent magnet is a relative measure of its intrinsic strength. Ferrite magnets typically produce magnetic field strengths of up to 2000 Gauss (0.2 Tesla).

Another type of permanent magnet consists of rare earth elements. The advent of rare earth magnets allows the design of high-intensity magnetic circuits that operate without external energy sources. Energy products from neodymium based magnets are now up to 50MGOe. Rare earth magnets are used in PTMS magnetic separators to collect paramagnetic minerals. Depending on the magnetic circuit, these separators generate magnetic field strengths of up to 24,000 Gauss (2.4 Tesla).
