Kaolin is a clayey mineral with kaolinite as the main component, commonly known as "porcelain earth", including kaolinite, pearl stone, dikasite and haloite and other minerals. The crystal chemical formula of kaolinite is Al4[Si4O10](OH)8, which is a 1:1 type layered silicate mineral. It is composed of a silica-oxygen tetrahedral layer and an alumina-oxygen octahedral layer, and the layers are connected by hydrogen and oxygen bonds. Kaolin is abundant and can be divided into hard kaolin, soft kaolin and sandy kaolin according to its texture, plasticity and sandy quality. According to its origin, it can be divided into coal measure kaolin and non-coal measure kaolin. Coal-measure kaolin is the solid waste produced in the process of coal production, including hard kaolin, semi-soft kaolin and soft kaolin, and its reserves account for more than 50% of the total reserves of kaolin. The gangue minerals of kaolin mainly include quartz, feldspar, mica, iron minerals and oxidized minerals of titanium.
The results of purifying kaolin by high gradient PTMS electromagnetic separator show that the magnetic separator can not only effectively remove Fe2O3, but also significantly reduce the contents of K2O and TiO2, and further improve the whiteness of the product. In addition to the high magnetic induction intensity, the pulp flow rate, the type of magnetic medium and other factors also have a certain effect on the magnetic separation of kaolin. It is also found that the natural whiteness of kaolin products can be increased by 1% by optimizing the flow rate of pulp and selecting suitable magnetic medium under the same magnetic induction intensity of magnetic field.
