Magnetic Separator FAQ

Straight answers to the questions buyers ask before they order. For material-specific questions see kaolin, feldspar, quartz, ceramics and lithium battery.

General questions

What is an electromagnetic slurry separator?

It is a wet high-gradient magnetic separator (HGMS) that pumps a mineral or material slurry through a magnetized matrix. Fine iron and weakly magnetic impurities stick to the matrix and the clean slurry flows out. The matrix is then flushed while the magnet is switched off.

Which materials can PTMS separators purify?

Kaolin, potassium and sodium feldspar, quartz stone, quartz sand and silica sand, ceramic glaze and body slurry, bentonite, and lithium battery cathode and anode materials (lithium cobalt oxide, lithium manganate, lithium iron phosphate, ternary materials, graphite). Our separators are also used in chemical, food, pharmaceutical and hardware lines.

How do I choose between the 3A89, 7A190, 11A250 and 20A400 slurry separators?

The last number is the bore (magnetic cavity) diameter in millimetres, so larger models handle more slurry per hour. As a published reference point on our wet slurry line, the 7A160 Wet Magnet is rated about 10–30 m³/h for slurry below 40 mesh. Final model choice depends on solids content, particle size and target iron level, so we confirm it after a free sample test.

What magnetic field strength do PTMS machines reach?

It depends on the machine type. Published figures include about 30,000 GS theoretical field strength for the 7A160 Wet Magnet, 18,000–30,000 GS in the working cavity of the electromagnetic dry powder machine, 2–3.5 T for the dry powder 3K160–20K600 series, and up to 12,000 Gauss on the surface of a 1-inch NdFeB magnetic bar. We match field strength and gradient to your material after the sample test.

Water-cooled, oil-cooled or stainless steel: which do I need?

Water-cooled and oil-cooled coils keep the field stable during continuous operation. Full stainless steel construction is used where corrosion or product contamination matters, for example lithium battery materials and food-grade applications.

Dry or wet magnetic separation: which should I choose?

Dry separation suits free-flowing powders such as battery materials, quartz powder and other mineral powders. Wet separation suits slurries and glazes such as kaolin, feldspar and ceramic slip. We advise based on your material and process.

How do I choose between an electromagnetic and a permanent magnetic separator?

Electromagnetic separators use a powered coil to build a strong, adjustable field. They suit fine or weakly magnetic iron and lines where the field must switch off for automatic discharge. Permanent magnet units need no power and keep running cost low, which fits coarse, free-flowing material with a light iron load.

Can a PTMS separator be connected to my existing production line?

Yes. We design in-line pipe, drawer, rotary and U-type units that drop into existing pipelines with no extra floor space.

Can you customize a model for my material?

Yes. Field strength, coil cooling, throughput and layout are engineered to your feed size, capacity and target purity.

Can I test my material before buying?

Yes. Send 5–10 kg of your material to our factory at No. 9, Building 2, Shijin Industrial Park, Keyun North Road, Shishan Town, Nanhai District, Foshan, Guangdong, China. We test it free of charge and deliver a report within 5 days of receiving your sample, showing the iron removed and the achievable result.

How much sample do you need, and how long does the test take?

5–10 kg of your material is enough for the free sample test. We deliver the test report within 5 days of receiving your sample.

How low can your separator bring the iron content?

It depends on your feed material and the model. Send us a sample and we run a free test, then report the actual Fe reduction your line can expect. We do not quote numbers without a test.

Do you stock spare parts?

Yes. Coils, matrices and IGBT/diode power modules are stocked so your separator can be restored to full capacity quickly.

What information do you need for an accurate quotation?

Your material type, particle size (mesh or mm), throughput (t/h or m³/h), solids content for slurries, current iron content and target, and destination port or country. A sample for testing lets us confirm the configuration before the final offer.

How do I get a quote?

Email [email protected] or WhatsApp +86 139 2990 7491 with your material, capacity, solids content and target iron level. We usually return a matched model and price within 24 hours.

Can PTMS dry powder electromagnetic separators be installed in series or parallel?

Yes. The PTMS electromagnetic dry powder machine can run as a single unit, or several units can be connected in series to push iron removal further, or in parallel to raise processing capacity. Each unit is PLC-controlled and completes excitation, feeding and iron discharge automatically, and one iron-cleaning cycle takes about 10 seconds. The machine vibrates during operation and monitors temperature to help prevent powder blocking, which suits fine powders such as quartz powder and feldspar powder. How many units and which layout your line needs depends on your powder and target iron level, so we confirm it with a free 5–10 kg sample test, reported within 5 days.

What is the difference between a vertical ring high gradient magnetic separator and an electromagnetic slurry separator?

A vertical ring high gradient magnetic separator works continuously: its vertical ring keeps rotating, captured magnetic material is washed out in the reverse direction, and a high-frequency vibration mechanism helps stop the magnetic medium from blocking. It suits weakly magnetic minerals in non-metallic ores. An electromagnetic slurry separator works in cycles: slurry passes through a magnetized matrix, then the valves close, the field switches off and the matrix is flushed to discharge the iron, fully automatically. It is widely used for fine iron removal from kaolin, feldspar and ceramic glaze slurry. The right choice depends on your ore, particle size and tonnage, so we recommend it after a free sample test.

How do you remove iron from lithium battery electrode slurry?

Electrode slurry is cleaned with pipeline or wet electromagnetic separators installed in the slurry line, as one stage of a multi-stage de-ironing plan that also covers raw materials and powders. PTMS supplies U-type, pipeline and rotary separators for lithium battery material slurry, with all-stainless-steel versions where product contamination matters. Iron in slurry often comes from worn milling media and from corrosion in slurry tanks and pipes, so the separator is placed downstream of those sources. The right model depends on your slurry, solids content and flow rate. Send us a sample for a free test, or WhatsApp +86 139 2990 7491 to discuss your line.

Why use a permanent magnetic separator before an electromagnetic slurry separator on a feldspar line?

Because the two machines remove different kinds of iron, and splitting the job protects the fine-iron stage. On a conventional wet feldspar line, a permanent magnetic separator first takes out strongly magnetic material. The electromagnetic slurry separator then removes the fine and weakly magnetic impurities, such as iron minerals, biotite, amphibole and tourmaline, which need a high-intensity field. This keeps the electromagnetic matrix from loading up with coarse iron. PTMS feldspar separators are used for both potassium and sodium feldspar. We confirm the stages for your ore with a free 5–10 kg sample test, reported within 5 days.

Where should the magnetic separator be installed in a ceramic glaze and slip line?

Install the electromagnetic separator after the glaze or body slurry has been prepared and sieved, and before the slurry goes to storage or production. Iron particles left in glaze and slip show up as black spots after firing, so this is the last point to catch them. Raw powders such as kaolin, feldspar, quartz and bentonite can also be cleaned earlier with dry electromagnetic or permanent magnetic separators. In the slurry stage, the ceramic glaze separator captures iron on its matrix, then switches off the field and flushes the matrix automatically. We adapt the sequence to your ceramic plant layout.

How much power does an electromagnetic slurry separator consume?

It depends on the model, and the coil is the main consumer. For the PTMS ceramic glaze separator series, published maximum coil power runs from 1.5 kW (WS1.5K160, 220 V) and 3 kW (WS3K89, 380 V) up to 7 kW, 11 kW and 20 kW (WS20K400, 380 V), with larger magnetic cavities and higher output on the bigger models. Coil power is a maximum rating, and actual consumption depends on the field you run and the duty cycle. For other series, ask for the current datasheet. Tell us your material and capacity, or WhatsApp +86 139 2990 7491, and we will size the most economical model.

How do you remove iron from lithium iron phosphate (LFP) powder?

For dry LFP powder, the usual tool is a magnetic rod box separator. The powder flows from the feed port through layers of permanent magnetic rods, which hold ferromagnetic particles while clean powder leaves through the discharge port. On the PTMS LFP magnetic separator, a 25 mm rod can reach up to 10,000 Gauss, and a cylinder pulls the rods so the captured iron drops out of a separate port without stopping the feed. Rod boxes can be built with 3, 5, 8 or 12 layers. For other battery materials, we can test 5–10 kg of your powder free and report within 5 days.

Which magnetic separator removes iron from quartz sand and powder for glass making?

For dry quartz powder used in glass, a dry electromagnetic powder separator such as the PTMS 7A300 quartz sand separator is a common choice. It is designed to remove weakly magnetic oxides and flake-like surface contaminants, and the same machine is used for ceramic, glass and refractory raw materials. Whether you need a dry or wet stage depends on whether you process sand or powder, its particle size and your target Fe₂O₃ level, so we match the configuration to your quartz line. Send 5–10 kg for a free sample test with a report within 5 days, or WhatsApp +86 139 2990 7491.

What matrix is used inside an electromagnetic slurry separator for kaolin?

The matrix is the magnetic medium inside the separator's field that actually catches the fine iron, and its type is matched to your slurry. PTMS supplies grids for slurry separators, a matrix designed for kaolin and feldspar, and a customised steel wool matrix. The choice depends on particle size, slurry flow and how fine the iron and mica impurities are. Matrices are also stocked as spare parts, so you can replace them when needed. Send a 5–10 kg kaolin sample and we will recommend the matrix with the test report, within 5 days.

What slurry solids content is suitable for a PTMS electromagnetic slurry separator?

Published reference data for the PTMS-H-B13K89J electromagnetic slurry separator list a slurry solid content of 40–60%, with capacity of at least 500 kg/h. That range suits many kaolin, feldspar and quartz slurry lines, but the workable solids level still depends on particle size, viscosity and your target iron level. Too thick a slurry can slow flow through the matrix; too thin lowers throughput efficiency. We confirm the right solids window for your feed with a free 5–10 kg sample test and report within 5 days, or WhatsApp +86 139 2990 7491.

How do you remove iron from ternary (NMC) cathode powder?

For dry ternary (NMC) cathode powder, PTMS uses dry electromagnetic separators built for lithium battery cathode and anode materials. The lithium cobalt oxide material magnetic separator is also stated as suitable for ternary materials, as well as LCO, lithium manganate, lithium carbonate and LFP, with SUS304 contact parts so the powder is not polluted. Related lithium hosts use water-oil double cooling for continuous duty. The exact layout depends on powder stickiness and your target metallic-iron level. Send 5–10 kg for a free sample test with a report within 5 days, or WhatsApp +86 139 2990 7491.

What does water-and-oil dual cooling mean on a PTMS slurry separator?

Water-and-oil dual cooling means the coil is cooled by forced oil circulation and by water cooling together, so the field stays stable in continuous duty. Published examples include the PTMS-H-B13K89J on the electromagnetic slurry separator series (water + oil dual cooling; working temperature ≤50 °C with cooling water) and the A40K530J mineral slurry iron remover (oil-water dual cooling, 0–40 kW adjustable). Dual cooling is chosen when coil load and duty cycle need more than a single water or oil circuit. We match cooling to your feldspar or mineral line after a free 5–10 kg sample test, reported within 5 days.
